What this calculator does
The Pace Calculator converts distance and elapsed time into pace per mile and pace per kilometer. It is useful for runners, walkers, hikers, and anyone comparing effort across routes of different lengths.
How to use the calculator step by step
Enter the distance completed, choose the distance unit used by the page, then enter the elapsed time. Select Calculate to see the average pace. Use the full moving time if you want race-style pace, or exclude long stops if you want a moving-pace estimate.
How the calculation works
Average pace is calculated by dividing total elapsed time by total distance. If a 10 km run takes 50 minutes, the average pace is 5 minutes per kilometer. Conversions between mile pace and kilometer pace use the standard relationship of 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers.
Worked example and scenario testing
Suppose you run 5 km in 27 minutes 30 seconds. Dividing 27.5 minutes by 5 gives an average pace of 5 minutes 30 seconds per kilometer. If the same effort were expressed per mile, the pace would be about 8 minutes 51 seconds per mile.
How to interpret your result
A lower time per unit of distance means a faster average pace. Pace does not show how evenly the effort was distributed, so two runs with the same average can feel very different if one contains hills, stops, or large speed changes.
Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations
GPS distance errors, pauses, steep terrain, wind, surface conditions, and manual timing can all affect the result. Average pace should not be treated as a complete measure of fitness or training quality.
Common mistakes to avoid
Common mistakes include mixing miles with kilometers, entering hours as minutes, forgetting seconds, or using total event time when you intended to measure moving time.
