What this calculator does
The Fuel Economy Calculator measures vehicle efficiency from actual driving data. Enter the distance driven and the amount of fuel used to calculate miles per gallon (MPG). If you also provide the fuel price per gallon, the calculator estimates the total fuel cost for that distance and the fuel cost per mile. This makes it useful for comparing vehicles, checking changes in efficiency, or tracking operating costs.
How to use the calculator step by step
Reset your trip meter or record the odometer reading after filling the tank. After driving, note the miles traveled and the gallons required to refill the tank. Enter those values into the calculator, then enter the price per gallon. Select Calculate to see MPG, total fuel cost, and cost per mile. For a meaningful efficiency estimate, use fuel consumption measured over a reasonable distance rather than a very short trip.
How the calculation works
Fuel economy is calculated as MPG = miles driven ÷ gallons used. Trip fuel cost is gallons used × price per gallon. Fuel cost per mile is total fuel cost ÷ miles driven. For example, driving 350 miles on 12 gallons gives about 29.17 MPG. At 3.50 per gallon, that fuel costs 42.00, which is about 0.12 per mile.
Worked example and scenario testing
Imagine two similar trips. On the first, a car travels 420 miles using 14 gallons, giving 30 MPG. On the second, it travels the same 420 miles using 16 gallons, giving 26.25 MPG. At 3.60 per gallon, the first trip costs 50.40 while the second costs 57.60. The difference can point to traffic, driving style, weather, tire pressure, load, or maintenance changes.
How to interpret your result
A higher MPG value means the vehicle traveled farther on each gallon of fuel. A lower cost per mile means less fuel money was spent for each mile traveled. Compare results measured under similar conditions because city driving, highway speed, temperature, terrain, passenger load, and towing can change fuel economy substantially.
Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations
The calculator is only as accurate as the measured distance and gallons entered. Small refill differences can distort results, especially over short distances. For better tracking, compare several full-tank measurements over time. The calculator does not account for maintenance, depreciation, insurance, tolls, or electricity used by plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Common mistakes to avoid
Avoid mixing kilometers with miles or liters with gallons. Do not use the fuel-tank capacity unless the entire tank was actually consumed and refilled. A common mistake is calculating MPG from a very short drive, where idling, warm-up time, and small refill differences can dominate the result. Also verify whether your gallons are US gallons or imperial gallons because they are different units.
Privacy and browser-based calculations
The calculation runs in your browser and requires only mileage, fuel quantity, and fuel price. Do not enter registration details, account information, addresses, or other unnecessary personal data.
