What this calculator does

The Markup Calculator shows how much a selling price exceeds cost and can convert between cost, markup percentage, and selling price. It is useful for pricing products or reviewing margins.

How to use the calculator step by step

Enter the cost and markup percentage, or the other values requested by the calculator. Use the percentage definition shown on the page because markup and margin are not the same.

How the calculation works

Selling price with markup is cost × (1 + markup rate). If an item costs 80 and markup is 25%, the selling price is 100.

Worked example and scenario testing

A product costs 60. With a 40% markup, the markup amount is 24 and the selling price is 84. The profit margin on that 84 selling price is about 28.6%, not 40%.

How to interpret your result

Markup is measured relative to cost, while margin is measured relative to selling price. Confusing the two can lead to incorrect pricing decisions.

Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations

The calculator does not automatically include tax, shipping, payment fees, overhead allocation, discounts, returns, or target profit unless they are included in the inputs.

Common mistakes to avoid

The classic mistake is treating a 30% markup as a 30% profit margin. They use different denominators and produce different selling prices.

Privacy and browser-based calculations

Only cost and pricing values are required. No customer or business account information is needed.
