What this calculator does

The Percentage Calculator solves common percentage relationships, such as finding a percentage of a number, determining what percentage one value is of another, or calculating percentage increase and decrease.

How to use the calculator step by step

Choose the percentage calculation that matches your question and enter the requested values. Pay attention to which number is the original or reference value, especially when calculating percentage change.

How the calculation works

To find x percent of y, multiply y by x divided by 100. To find what percentage a is of b, divide a by b and multiply by 100. Percentage change is usually (new value − original value) ÷ original value × 100.

Worked example and scenario testing

Twenty percent of 250 is 50. If a price rises from 80 to 100, the increase is 20 and the percentage increase is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

How to interpret your result

Percentages express a relationship relative to a reference amount. The same absolute difference can represent very different percentages depending on the starting value.

Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations

A percentage can be mathematically correct but misleading if the reference value is inappropriate or extremely small. Percentage change from zero is not defined by the standard formula.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not divide by the new value when calculating standard percentage change; the original value is normally the denominator. Also distinguish percentage points from percent change.
