What this calculator does

The VAT Calculator estimates value-added tax on a net price or separates VAT from a VAT-inclusive total. It is useful for checking invoices and comparing net and gross prices.

How to use the calculator step by step

Enter the amount and VAT rate, then select whether the amount is before VAT or already includes VAT if the calculator provides that option. Use the legally applicable rate for the product or service.

How the calculation works

When VAT is added to a net amount, VAT equals net price multiplied by the VAT rate. Gross price equals net price plus VAT. To extract VAT from a tax-inclusive total, the calculation must divide by one plus the tax rate rather than simply subtracting the percentage.

Worked example and scenario testing

At a 20% VAT rate, a net price of 100 produces 20 VAT and a gross price of 120. If 120 already includes 20% VAT, the VAT portion is 20, not 24.

How to interpret your result

The result shows the mathematical tax component at the entered rate. Whether a transaction is taxable, exempt, zero-rated, or subject to special rules depends on the relevant jurisdiction.

Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations

Different products, customer types, countries, thresholds, reverse-charge rules, and reporting requirements can affect actual VAT treatment.

Common mistakes to avoid

A common mistake is extracting VAT from a gross price by multiplying the gross price by the VAT percentage. Inclusive VAT requires reversing the gross-up calculation.

Privacy and browser-based calculations
