What this calculator does
The Auto Loan Calculator estimates vehicle financing payments using the financed amount, interest rate, and loan term. It can help separate the effect of vehicle price, down payment, trade-in, and financing terms.
How to use the calculator step by step
Enter the financed amount after any down payment or trade-in adjustments represented by the form. Add the interest rate and term, then compare payment and total interest under different scenarios.
How the calculation works
Auto loans commonly use fixed amortizing payments. The financed principal is repaid over equal installments while interest is charged on the outstanding balance.
Worked example and scenario testing
Financing 25,000 for 60 months at 7% produces a payment of roughly 495 per month. A larger down payment reduces both the payment and total interest because less principal is financed.
How to interpret your result
The payment estimate does not represent the full cost of owning the vehicle. Insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration, taxes, and depreciation are separate costs.
Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations
Dealer fees, taxes, rebates, negative trade equity, balloon payments, and lender-specific terms may not be included unless the calculator has fields for them.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not compare vehicles using payment alone. Dealers can lower a payment by extending the loan term, increasing the total amount paid.
