What this calculator does
The Monthly Budget Calculator compares income with recurring expenses to estimate how much money remains, or how large a shortfall exists, during a typical month.
How to use the calculator step by step
Enter monthly take-home income and all major expense categories requested by the page. Convert annual or weekly bills into monthly equivalents before entering them.
How the calculation works
Budget surplus equals total monthly income minus total monthly expenses. A negative result indicates expenses exceed the income included in the calculation.
Worked example and scenario testing
If monthly income is 4,500 and listed expenses total 3,900, the remaining amount is 600 before any omitted savings goals or irregular expenses.
How to interpret your result
The result is only as complete as the categories entered. A positive balance can disappear if annual insurance, repairs, gifts, travel, or other irregular costs have been left out.
Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations
Budgets cannot predict unexpected expenses, income changes, inflation, emergencies, or spending that was not included in the inputs.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not compare monthly income with annual bills without converting them. Another common mistake is leaving out irregular expenses simply because they are not paid every month.
