What this calculator does
The Emergency Fund Calculator estimates a savings target based on essential monthly expenses and a chosen number of months of coverage.
How to use the calculator step by step
Enter essential monthly expenses and select the desired coverage period. Focus on unavoidable costs such as housing, food, utilities, insurance, transportation, and minimum debt payments.
How the calculation works
Emergency-fund target equals essential monthly expenses multiplied by the selected number of months. If essential expenses are 3,000 and the target is six months, the estimate is 18,000.
Worked example and scenario testing
A household spending 4,200 per month in total may only have 2,900 of essential expenses after removing discretionary spending. A six-month emergency target based on essentials would therefore be about 17,400.
How to interpret your result
The result is a planning target rather than a universal rule. Income stability, dependents, health coverage, job market conditions, and access to other resources can affect the appropriate amount.
Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations
The calculator does not predict the size or duration of future emergencies and does not account for every household's insurance or support network.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not automatically multiply total lifestyle spending when the goal is to cover essential expenses during an emergency. Also avoid holding so little cash that normal unexpected bills exhaust the fund immediately.
Privacy and browser-based calculations
Only monthly expense totals are required. No bank or employment information needs to be entered.
