What this calculator does

The Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a trip will require and what that fuel will cost. It uses three inputs: trip distance in kilometers, vehicle fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers, and the price paid for one liter of fuel. The result is useful for trip budgeting, comparing two vehicles, or checking how a change in fuel price affects the cost of the same journey.

How to use the calculator step by step

Enter the total trip distance in kilometers. Next, enter your vehicle's average fuel consumption in liters per 100 kilometers, using a realistic figure from recent driving rather than the manufacturer's best-case rating when possible. Finally, enter the current price per liter. Select Calculate to see both the estimated liters required and the total fuel cost. For a round trip, include both directions in the distance unless the distance field already represents the complete journey.

How the calculation works

The calculator first estimates fuel required using: fuel required = distance × fuel economy ÷ 100. It then calculates total fuel cost using: total cost = fuel required × price per liter. For example, a 500 km trip in a vehicle using 8 L/100 km requires about 40 liters. At 1.50 per liter, the estimated fuel cost is 60. The calculation assumes the entered fuel economy remains roughly constant across the journey.

Worked example and scenario testing

Suppose you are planning a 320 km journey and your car normally averages 7.2 L/100 km. The trip would require about 23.04 liters. If fuel costs 1.60 per liter, the estimated cost is 36.86. If the price rises to 1.75 per liter, the same journey would cost about 40.32. Comparing these results shows that the vehicle's fuel consumption and the local pump price affect the budget independently.

How to interpret your result

The liters figure estimates the amount of fuel consumed over the entered distance. The total cost multiplies that amount by the entered price per liter. Treat the result as a planning figure rather than an exact receipt. Real consumption may increase with traffic, high speeds, heavy loads, air conditioning, hills, cold starts, towing, poor tire pressure, or long periods of idling.

Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations

Accuracy depends mainly on the fuel-consumption value you enter. A dashboard average measured over several recent trips is usually more representative than an advertised efficiency figure. The calculator does not add tolls, parking, maintenance, depreciation, charging costs for plug-in hybrids, or detours. It also assumes one fuel price for the whole journey even if you refuel at different stations.

Common mistakes to avoid

Common mistakes include entering miles while the calculator expects kilometers, using miles per gallon instead of liters per 100 kilometers, forgetting the return journey, or entering the price for a gallon rather than a liter. Another common error is using an unusually efficient highway figure for a trip that will include heavy urban traffic.

Privacy and browser-based calculations

The calculation runs locally in your browser. The fields require only distance, fuel-consumption, and fuel-price numbers, so there is no reason to enter names, account details, vehicle registration numbers, or other personal information.
