What this calculator does

The Savings Goal Calculator estimates the contribution required to reach a target balance or projects how a current savings plan may grow toward a financial goal.

How to use the calculator step by step

Enter the target amount, current savings, time available, expected return or interest rate, and contribution assumptions requested by the page. Test a conservative rate as well as an optimistic one when future returns are uncertain.

How the calculation works

The calculation combines the current balance, growth over time, and recurring contributions. When interest or investment returns are included, earlier deposits generally have more time to compound than later deposits.

Worked example and scenario testing

If a goal is 20,000 in four years and you already have 5,000, the remaining amount can be spread across future contributions. Interest earned during the period may reduce the amount that must come directly from new deposits.

How to interpret your result

The result provides a planned contribution path, not a guarantee that the goal will be reached. Increasing contributions, extending the deadline, or earning a higher return can reduce the required periodic deposit.

Accuracy, assumptions, and limitations

Future rates and investment returns can change. Taxes, account fees, missed contributions, withdrawals, and inflation may also affect the real purchasing power of the final balance.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not assume a high investment return is certain simply because it makes the required contribution smaller. Also keep monthly and annual contribution frequencies consistent with the calculator.
